Since 2008, Tampa Bay Water has been working nationally and regionally to understand the impacts of climate variability on its water supplies so it can adjust and adapt to meet demand. With half of the region’s supply coming from river water, which is directly linked to rainfall, understanding how climate variability affects supply reliability is crucial to future planning.

Environmental Recovery Sustained in the Region

When Tampa Bay Water was formed 15 years ago, one of the goals of the regional utility was to reduce groundwater pumping at long-producing facilities to enable the environment to recover. Groundwater pumping was one of the causes of low water levels in lakes and wetlands near regional wellfields. (Other factors affecting water levels include drainage changes and development).

Several residents entered the Tampa Bay Community Water-Wise Awards to compete for the best design in Florida-Friendly landscapes. Residents in Hillsborough County, Pinellas County, Pasco County, New Port Richey, St. Petersburg and Tampa were invited to apply.
